MS Admiral Tegetthoff

The 2012 completely new designed flagship MS Admiral Tegetthoff has been built in 1987. In 1987 the Austrian shipyards launched the two boats MS Admiral Tegetthoff and MS Prinz Eugen, which are identical in construction. The MS Admiral Tegetthoff is the flagship of the DDSG Blue Danube. The art-nouveau style boat is believed to be the most famous charter boat and has been ploughing the waves of the Danube since 2001. For better manoeuvrability -mainly for mooring manoeuvres – the boat is equipped with an electrically driven bowthruster. Among other facilities are sonar, radar, and radiotelephone services to make for safe navigation.

WHO WAS ADMIRAL TEGETTHOFF?

The baron Admiral Wilhelm Freiherr von Tegetthoff (1827 – 1871) was the most outstanding admiral of the Austrian navy. He advocated the construction of steamships, and distinguished himself by his historic victory over the Italian fleet near the island of Lissa before the Dalmatian coast on 20 July 1866.

INTERESTING FACTS WORTH KNOWING

The MS Admiral Tegetthoff was named by the wife of the then provincial governor of Upper Austria Mr. Ratzenböck in the old town of Grein in the Strudengau region. Later, when renovated, the boat was refurbished art-nouveau style, and equipped with high-end light and sound facilities. A few years ago, half the sun deck – unlike one third, as before – was roofed for better protection against the sun. Time and again, there are regular voyages on the schedule over several days inclusive of hotel accomodation, as for instance from Vienna to Passau or Budapest, so that the boat is operated flexibly on a variety of routes.
